The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the next major expansion of Nintendo and Illumination’s cinematic Mario universe, bringing the beloved video game franchise into a full cosmic adventure. Released in April 2026, the film continues the story introduced in the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie and shifts the action from the Mushroom Kingdom into deep space. Inspired by the iconic Super Mario Galaxy games, the film explores new planets, galactic threats, and legendary characters like Rosalina and Bowser Jr. With returning voice actors and major new cast additions, the movie represents one of the biggest animated releases of the decade. It blends Nintendo’s classic platforming universe with Illumination’s cinematic animation style, delivering a visually rich space adventure filled with nostalgia, humor, and high-stakes storytelling.

The film is directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, continuing their work from the previous Mario installment. Produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, the movie reflects a close collaboration between Western animation and Japanese game design philosophy. The screenplay is written by Matthew Fogel, while Brian Tyler returns to compose the orchestral score. The returning voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. This continuity ensures consistency in character portrayal while expanding the universe into a larger galactic narrative.

New characters significantly expand the Mario universe in this installment. Brie Larson voices Rosalina, a cosmic guardian tied to the Lumas and deep space lore, while Benny Safdie plays Bowser Jr., introducing a new generational conflict within Bowser’s family. Donald Glover voices Yoshi, marking a major fan-favorite addition to the cast. Other rumored and introduced characters include Wart and Honey Queen, adding deeper references to classic Nintendo history. The film’s production emphasizes large-scale worldbuilding with planetary environments, space travel sequences, and advanced animation techniques that push Illumination’s rendering capabilities further than ever before. With its April 2026 release, the movie stands as a centerpiece of Nintendo’s global cinematic expansion strategy.
